Ayurveda doesn't generally treat men's vitality as a single-herb problem. Classical formulations almost always combine multiple botanicals, each contributing a different traditional role — stress resilience, physical strength, circulation, or drive — rather than relying on one "hero ingredient." Here's a quick-reference guide to the ten herbs most consistently found in serious Ayurvedic men's performance formulations.
- Ashwagandha — an adaptogenic root traditionally used to support stress resilience and stamina.
- Shilajit — a mineral-rich Himalayan resin associated with vitality and the Ayurvedic concept of ojas (vital essence).
- Safed Musli — a strength-and-endurance root, traditionally considered a premium vajikarana herb.
- Gokshura — a spiny fruit classically linked to male drive and vigor.
- Shatavari — a rasayana (rejuvenative) root traditionally associated with stamina and vitality (yes, it's used for men too, not only women's health, in classical texts).
- Kaunch Beej (Kapikachhu) — a processed velvet-bean seed, classically categorised for strength and vigor.
- Vidarikand — a nourishing tuber used as a rasayana for strength and vitality.
- Bala — literally translating to "strength," this herb is classically used to support muscular endurance.
- Nagarmotha — an aromatic root traditionally used for balance and overall wellness.
- Akarkara — a warming root traditionally used to support circulation and drive.
Why combination matters more than any single herb
If you've researched any one of these botanicals individually, you'll notice a pattern: none of them are traditionally used alone in serious formulations. Ayurveda's logic is cumulative: stress resilience, physical strength, circulation and drive are treated as parts of one broader picture of vitality. That is a traditional rationale, not a tested claim that combinations work better.
What to look for in a formulation
When comparing Ayurvedic men's supplements, check whether a product names its botanicals specifically (with both common and Sanskrit/Latin names where relevant) rather than hiding behind a generic "proprietary blend." Transparency about sourcing and standardisation matters as much as the ingredient list itself.
Where all ten come together
Herbovian Performance Capsules combine all ten of these botanicals in a single daily formulation, alongside the complementary Intimate Performance Oil for topical use. See the full ingredient breakdown and certificate of analysis note →
Traditional use versus evidence
For most of these ten herbs, the descriptions above reflect classical Ayurvedic texts and practice. Human research varies widely: Ashwagandha has a body of small clinical trials, Kaunch Beej has been studied mainly as a natural source of L-DOPA, a 2025 review found no robust evidence that Gokshura raises testosterone, and several of the others have little or no good-quality human research. Each ingredient guide on this blog explains what is and isn't known.
One important limit: research on an individual herb, where it exists, is not evidence about any particular finished product. Herbovian Performance Capsules have not themselves been tested in clinical trials, and no outcome from a study on a single ingredient should be read as a promise of what the capsules will do.
